A small line in Microsoft’s Copilot terms triggered a significant response a couple of weeks ago. The phrase “for entertainment purposes only”, when shared without context, understandably raised concerns across education.
For school and Trust leaders already approaching AI cautiously, the immediate question was simple:
If this is how Copilot is described, what does that mean for our use of it?
Further clarification followed quickly. The statement applies to the consumer version, not enterprise tenants. UK schools using Copilot within Microsoft 365 continue to operate within enterprise protections, including tenancy containment and alignment with data protection requirements such as the UK GDPR.
For many, nothing substantive has changed.
However, the moment is still important, because it highlighted something deeper than a wording issue.
Much AI governance in schools currently rests, at least in part, on assumptions:
Most of the time, those assumptions hold.
Until something prompts leaders to ask: do we actually know this for certain?
The Copilot discussion did exactly that.
In practice, the greatest AI risk for schools and MATs rarely comes from authorised enterprise tools.
It more often arises from unknown or inconsistent usage:
staff signing into consumer tools with personal accounts
AI filling gaps where guidance or access have not yet caught up
well-intentioned use taking place outside the protections leaders believe are in place
This is not a failure of professionalism. It is a predictable outcome in fast-moving, high-pressure environments such as schools. When governance works well, staff do not need to look for alternatives.
When it does not, they will.
Rather than asking only whether a vendor can be trusted, a more helpful question for schools is:
Do we have clarity about what is actually happening, or are we relying on what we think is happening?
That means being able to answer confidently questions such as:
Do we know which AI tools are in routine use across teaching and operations?
Do we know how staff are authenticated when they use them?
Could we clearly explain what data protections apply in each case?
Would we notice quickly if usage drifted outside our intended guardrails?
If the answer is “not entirely”, that is common, but it is also a prompt for action.
Confidence in AI use does not come from product announcements or general reassurance. It comes from:
visibility, rather than guesswork
configurations that reduce ambiguity for staff
guidance that reflects real school workflows
governance that is tested and reviewed, not written once and filed away
When those elements are in place, moments like last week do not create panic. They create a measured, proportionate reason to review.
AI in education will continue to evolve rapidly. Terms will change. Capabilities will expand. Headlines will sometimes cause alarm.
The schools and trusts that cope best will not be those trying to anticipate every change, but those who know, with evidence and confidence, what is happening inside their own environment.
